Traffic Case Study
City of Edmonton Speed Trailers and Data Logging Project
The Challenge
City of Edmonton needed data collecting and measurement capabilities to do a speed study. The client wanted to conduct three different studies:
- Permanent/long term speed study
- School zone speed study
- Residential neighbourhood study
The Solution
Step 1
A Trafco sister company provided trailers to which speed equipment was mounted. Trailers could be easily moved/transported to different locations at any time.
Step 2
Trafco also worked with Nu Metrics to provide the best traffic counting equipment for each specific speed study.
- Groundhog was chosen for permanent/long term studies. The Groundhog is a wireless unit that is cored in to the traffic lane with an LBU (or local base unit receiver) mounted to the side of the road to collect data. The modem inside the device sends data back to a designated computer in client-specified intervals. The Groundhog produces speed, classification, and volume data, with the added feature of measuring road surface temperature with an external probe.
- The NC 200 was provided for the more temporary speed studies with the capabilities to give speed, classification, and volume data. It is easy and quick to set up and install, placed in the centre of the traffic lane, with a rubber protective mat.
- The Trans Q Radar unit was chosen to provide data for the school zone and residential speed studies. This device collects speed, classification, and volume data, and is easily mounted to trailers that are easily transported to different speed study locations.
The Result
The City of Edmonton has had great success in collecting data for these three studies, and is continuing to grow the project. They are extremely satisfied with the service and equipment provided.
